Heiki Mätlik

Musician
and guitar tutor

HEIKI MÄTLIK has performed as a soloist and a chamber musician in all of the Baltic states as well as in Nordic, Russia and European countries and had concert tours in Australia, USA, Canada and Japan.
He is a guitar professor at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre from 1990. He has also teached masterclasses abroad (in Finland, Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Germany, USA, Japan etc.).

He has collaborated with several well-known Estonian and foreign vocal and instrumental soloists and with acclaimed conductors like Mika Eichenholz, Paul Mägi and Toomas Vavilov.
On Mätlik’s initiative several Estonian composers, such as Ester Mägi, Kuldar Sink, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Raimo Kangro, René Eespere, Peeter Vähi, Alo Põldmäe and Anti Marguste have composed solo and chamber music for guitar.Mätlik has recorded over 40 CDs and DVDs which include complete lute music by J. S. Bach, music by Astor Piazzolla, Joaquin Rodrigo, Julian Arcas, Estonian composers Kuldar Sink, Ester Mägi, Lepo Sumera, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Peeter Vähi and also music by Max Reger, Paul Hindemith, Eugéne Ysaye, Arthur Honegger.
Heiki Mätlik also made over 1000 recordings for Estonian Radio.

His recordings has been released for Warner Music Company (USA), Antes (Germany), Harmonia Mundi (USA) & AlbaRecords (Finland) Forte (Estonia) etc.

He has been a host for TV series at the Estonian Television, such as Guitar Plays (1981-84) and Guitar School (1990-93), as well as for broadcasts at the Estonian Radio. He has performed in Russian, Finnish, German and Australian TV and radio live broadcasts.

Heiki Mätlik is also the author of five practical guitar textbooks, such as The ABC of Guitar Playing, The School of Classical Guitar I-III, Exercises for Guitar Playing and Acoustic Guitar. In 1990 Finnish Atena Publishers published his Guitar Music Encyclopaedia presenting c. 600 guitar composers, which was translated into English and published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc. (of the U.S.A.) in 2007.
