Helena Tulve: “Sula (Thaw) denotes the process of thawing, melting – the transformation of ideas, materials, timbres and sounds from one state to another. The composition was partly inspired by the rather topical notion of global warming, by this image of a colossal iceberg thawing up. How the iceberg initially emerges on the horizon – cold and radiant in appearance, even ethereal and somehow unreal – how it then steadily approaches, growing gradually bigger and more palpable, and how it eventually, in consequence of a long-lasting discharge process, bursts into a gargantuan mass of roaring water whose energy and destructive power are nigh unfathomable. And yet, as the eye of the retreating beholder might discern, there is a distinct direction as well as uncontrollable order to this massive movement.”

Helena Tulve's orchestral composition Sula won the International Rostrum of Composers in Paris in 2004.
